About this artwork

This is a vintage artwork created by unknown artist around 1875-80.

On the banks of the Yamuna, the young cowherd Krishna once played a mysterious and unforgettable divine game.

The gopis of Vrindavan had gone to the river at dawn to bathe and perform a sacred vow, praying for Krishna to be their eternal beloved. As they left their garments on the riverbank and entered the water, Krishna quietly gathered the clothes and climbed into a nearby kadamba tree.

When the gopis emerged from the river, they found Krishna smiling above them, holding their garments and calling to them. Embarrassed and pleading, they asked him to return what was theirs. Krishna gently insisted that they step forward with folded hands and receive them.

Though playful on the surface, this moment carries a deeper meaning in the tradition of bhakti. The gopis represent souls devoted completely to the Divine. By asking them to come before him without pride or concealment, Krishna symbolically asks the soul to stand before God without ego, without pretense, and without the coverings of worldly identity.

In this playful act, Krishna is not mocking them but blessing their devotion. Their vow is fulfilled, and their love becomes pure and unconditional.

The story reminds devotees that the path to the Divine requires total surrender. When the soul lets go of all pride and illusion, it stands open before the eternal.

In the playful smile of Krishna and the devotion of the gopis, the tradition sees not mischief alone, but a profound teaching about love, surrender, and the intimacy between the human soul and the Divine.
