Shri Shanmukha Subramania Swami

This is a vintage artwork created by Raja Ravi Varma around 1900–1915.

It depicts Shanmukha, also known as Skanda, Murugun or Subramania, the son of Shiva and brother of Ganesha. In Hindu tradition he is revered as the commander of the divine army of Shiva, the youthful warrior who restores balance whenever cosmic order is threatened.

Iconography

In this image the god appears with six faces, which is why he is called Shanmukha (shan = six, mukha = faces). The six faces symbolize the ability to perceive all directions simultaneously, representing omniscience and divine awareness.

In certain traditions he is also described only god that is adho-mukha, a deity who can face downward, symbolizing dominion over the subterranean realms known as the patala lokas.

A serpent appears in his iconography, representing control over their primal instincts. Beneath him is the peacock, his sacred mount. In many depictions he rides this peacock through the mystical Saravana forests, the place associated with his birth.

Shanmukha is believed to have two consorts: Valli – a tribal goddess representing raw desire, passion, and the wild force of nature. Devasena – a celestial princess symbolizing discipline, order, and focused action.

Some scriptures also describe him as a celibate warrior, entirely devoted to his divine mission.

Birth Story

Long ago the gods were defeated by the powerful demon Tarakasura. A prophecy declared that only a son of Shiva could defeat him.

At the time, Shiva remained deep in meditation, withdrawn from the world.

Eventually a divine spark of cosmic energy emerged from him, not a conventional birth, but a blazing manifestation of pure power. The energy was so intense that the world itself could not contain it.

The fire was first carried by Agni, the god of fire. Even Agni could not hold it and passed the energy to Ganga.

Ganga carried the divine sparks to a mystical forest of reeds known as Saravana.

From this sacred place arises one of his most famous mantras:

Om Sa-Ra-Va-Na Bha-Va

Within the marshlands of Saravana, the sparks transformed into six divine infants. They were discovered and nurtured by the celestial apsaras known as the Krittikas.

When Parvati found the six children, she embraced them all at once and they merged into a single radiant child with six faces.

The Warrior of the Gods

Once grown, Shanmukha became the supreme commander of the celestial armies. Armed with his sacred spear known as the Vel, he defeated Tarakasura and restored balance to the cosmos.

The Vel spear symbolizes the clarity and power to pierce illusion, ignorance, and inner darkness.
