This is a vintage artwork published in early 19th century.

In the age when gods and demons sought immortality, the great ocean of existence was chosen to be churned for the nectar of eternal life. This moment is remembered as the Samudra Manthan, the cosmic churning that would reveal both treasures and trials.

To accomplish this immense task, Mount Mandara was used as the churning rod and the mighty serpent Vasuki became the rope. The devas and the asuras pulled from opposite sides, striving together in a rare moment of shared purpose. Yet as the mountain began to sink into the depths, the balance of the effort was threatened.

At that crucial moment, Vishnu took the form of Kurma, the divine tortoise. He descended beneath the waters and supported the mountain upon his vast and steady back. With this silent strength, he became the unseen foundation that allowed creation’s great endeavor to continue.

From the churning emerged many wonders celestial beings, sacred jewels, the goddess of prosperity, and finally the nectar of immortality. But the story also reminds us that before blessings arise, the depths of existence must be stirred.

The image of the Kurma avatar expresses a profound truth. Transformation requires patience and endurance. The divine often works not only through visible action but through quiet support, holding the world steady while change unfolds.

In this form, Vishnu becomes the axis of balance, teaching that beneath the turbulence of life there must always be a stable center a foundation upon which the journey toward renewal can take place.
