About this artwork
This is a vintage artwork is by famous artist Raja Ravi Varma.
In the vast stillness before creation awakens, Vishnu rests upon the endless coils of the cosmic serpent Shesha. This form is known as Shesha Narayana, the Lord who abides in timeless serenity at the heart of the universe.
Shesha, with his many hoods spread like a royal canopy, represents infinity and the unbroken continuity of existence. His name means “that which remains,” the eternal foundation upon which worlds arise and dissolve. Upon this living throne, Vishnu reclines in deep repose, floating upon the boundless ocean of cosmic potential.
From his presence emerges the rhythm of creation. It is said that when he breathes, universes come into being, and when he withdraws into stillness, they return to silence. At his feet sits Lakshmi, the goddess of grace and prosperity, serving him with devotion and symbolizing the harmony that sustains life.
This image is not merely one of divine rest. It expresses a profound philosophical vision that beneath the movement of time and the changing forms of the world lies an eternal consciousness, calm and unmoving.
Shesha Narayana reminds the devotee that existence itself rises from a state of perfect balance. In the midst of life’s turmoil, there remains a deeper ocean of peace where the Divine abides, sustaining all creation with effortless presence.
