About this artwork

This is a vintage artwork published by Calcutta Art Studio published in early 19th century.

In the boundless ocean of cosmic stillness, Narayana rests upon the infinite serpent Ananta, entering a state of serene and timeless repose. This sacred vision is known as the eternal resting place of Vishnu, a symbol of the deep mystery from which creation itself emerges.

Ananta, the endless serpent whose many hoods rise like a protective canopy, represents infinity and the unbroken continuity of existence. Upon his coiled body, Vishnu reclines in effortless calm, floating upon the waters that signify the primordial state before the worlds take form.

From Vishnu’s navel springs a radiant lotus, and upon this lotus appears Brahma, the creator. This moment expresses the profound idea that creation unfolds from divine consciousness. The universe, with all its movement and diversity, arises from a silent source that remains unchanged.

Beside Vishnu sits Lakshmi, the gentle goddess of grace and prosperity, attending to him with devotion. Her presence reflects the sustaining harmony that allows life to flourish. Together they embody balance, stillness and abundance, rest and renewal.

This image is not merely a depiction of divine sleep. It is a meditation on the rhythm of existence. When Vishnu rests, creation rests within him. When he awakens, worlds come into being.

The eternal resting place of Narayana reminds the seeker that beneath the changing tides of life lies an infinite ocean of peace — a source from which all forms arise and into which all return.
